Cosmetic Chemistry!
Summary:
In the beginning of this project we had to choose who our target audience was going to be. My group (Michelle, Felipe and me) decided to focus on products designed for babies, so mothers were are target audience. When thinking about these products we knew that they had to be made for sensitive skin and couldn't contain any harsh ingredients that could potentially irritate the skin. The products we ended up making were: bar soap, lotion, and sunscreen. In addition to the chemistry side of the project, we had to create a magazine ad and a billboard. We made these in Humanities. We also created a logo (you can see it in the image to the left).
Reflection:
My favorite part of this project was making the bar soap. All groups made bar soap for a product, and for my group that was the hardest and most complicated process. I think that's the reason that I liked it. The process of making the soap and getting our hands a little dirty during the project was a lot of fun. The thing that amazed me most was that we were actually making soap . . . with chemistry! I think our biggest success during this entire project was the bar soap. Originally, we only had normal, flat, and boring shaped molds, which was actually a good thing considering the more intricate the mold, the harder it was to get out; but we wanted to challenge ourselves. Michelle bought molds with really small letters in them, and we were worried they wouldn't come out . But they came out perfectly and we were all very proud. If I could do this project again I think I would try to make my product earlier. I made lotion. While it turned out okay in the end, I wish that I had done it sooner, so that I could have made it even better. A mistake I made was waiting, and I learned that if I want to perfect something, I need to give myself the time to do so. During this project I learned that if I really try, I can work with anyone, and trust them to do their own work. I didn't let myself take on too much of the workload and am glad about that. I think that for this project I made my best work with others and that as a team we did a great job. Lastly, I do believe that my group made good decisions in choosing to work with each other.
During this project we had to make a product info sheet telling the reader about the chemistry behind our products. Mine is attached below, along with my billboard and magazine ad.
