Class Novel
The Project:The point of this project was to practice our writing and collaboration skills. The graduating class of 2014 came together to write this book.
Twenty-two students each wrote a chapter of this book, putting endless hours of time and energy into their work. After weeks of collaborating we put all of the chapters together which lead to the creation of Rolled. Our story focuses on the lives on teenagers who go to a party, which happens to take a wrong turn. This has been one of my favorite projects that I have done at HTHI. I love writing-- especially creative writing-- so this project was perfect for me. I had a pretty thorough process, and I think that because of that I was able to produce a great chapter. I actually ended up writing two chapters, and then choosing one. I am happy that I did this because I was able to use aspects from the first one I wrote to the second one. One thing I learned about fiction writing is that you are truly never done. Sure, you go through countless revisions and edits, but in the end I think there could always be more to be done. One thing I learned from someone else about this process is that collaborating on one writing piece with multiple people can be a challenge. A fun one, though. It took a lot of collaborating, but in the end I think it strengthened that skill in me. This was also the most challenging part for me. I had to constantly make sure that when I was mentioned in someone else's chapter, that it matched up with mine. The most rewarding part was definitely seeing the final product. Just knowing that 22 people came together and wrote one book was an amazing feeling. I do think that this book feels "done." I feel confident that I put my best into this project, and because of that I am proud of the final product. |
Chapter Excerpt:Delores"Being short, I squeeze my way between some people and make my way to the middle. I can now see Brody and Norma throwing punches at each other. And, standing off to the side, I see Edgar. Silent. Focused. Determined. I start to get a weird feeling about all this, but try to push it away.
It’s not up to me anymore, I remind myself. I ignore all of my thoughts and try to focus on the now. From this point on, I am going to let things happen as they will. And hopefully, Edgar won’t go too crazy. " Click here to read my full chapter. |
